Money Plant – Complete Growing & Care Guide

Money Plant is one of those plants that makes gardening easy and enjoyable. It was also one of the first plants that became comfortable in my shady balcony.
My balcony doesn't receive strong direct sunlight throughout the day, so I slowly started choosing plants that enjoy shade and filtered light. Money Plant fitted in perfectly. Along with a few other shade-loving plants, it has helped turn my balcony into a small green corner where I love spending time.
The best part? It doesn't need complicated care.
🌱 Introduction
Money Plant, commonly known as Pothos, is a popular houseplant because it is easy to grow and adapts well to different conditions. Its heart-shaped leaves and trailing vines look beautiful in pots, hanging baskets or simply placed on a shelf. It can also be grown in both soil and water, making it a great plant for beginners.
☀️ Sunlight Requirements
Money Plant prefers bright, indirect light. It can do well in a shady balcony or indoors as long as there is enough natural light. Avoid strong afternoon sunlight for long periods, as it can burn the leaves. If the plant is growing very slowly or the leaves are becoming smaller, move it to a brighter spot.
💧 Watering
One of the biggest mistakes with Money Plant is overwatering. Check the top 1–2 inches of soil before watering. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Yellow leaves, soft stems and a bad smell from the soil can indicate overwatering.
🌱 Best Soil & Potting Mix
Use a loose, well-draining mix of cocopeat, garden soil, compost or vermicompost, and perlite or coarse sand. Always use a pot with drainage holes.
🌿 Fertilizer
Money Plant doesn't need heavy feeding. During active growth, occasional vermicompost, compost or diluted balanced liquid fertilizer can encourage healthy new leaves.
✂️ Pruning
For a fuller plant, prune longer vines occasionally by cutting just above a healthy node. The cuttings can be used to grow new plants.
🌱 Propagation
Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node and place it in clean water or moist potting mix. Keep the node underwater while growing in water. Once roots develop, continue in water or transfer it to soil.
🐛 Common Problems
Watch for yellow leaves, brown leaf edges, mealybugs and spider mites. Regular checks make problems easier to catch early.
❌ Common Mistakes
Avoid overwatering, complete darkness, pots without drainage, too much fertilizer and never pruning long, bare vines.
💡 My Balcony Tip
If you have a shady balcony, don't think of limited sunlight as a problem. Choose plants that enjoy those conditions. Money Plant can be combined with other shade-loving plants using hanging pots, shelves and different levels.
📸 Healthy Growth
Healthy growth usually shows new leaves, firm green foliage, strong vines, new shoots after pruning and steady growth.
🌿 Conclusion
Money Plant doesn't ask for much — good indirect light, proper watering, well-draining soil and occasional feeding. For beginners, balcony gardeners or anyone with limited sunlight, it is a wonderful plant to start with. Don't fight the shade. Build your garden around it.
